CHAPTER TEN

David arrived on Saturday morning. Kate was upstairs playing with her new doll. Richard had kept his promise and phoned her every evening, so as yet her daughter wasn’t aware of any trouble in the family.

“Well,” David wanted to know once he was comfortably seated with a drink in his hand. “What has he had to say?”

“He rings us every evening just before Kate goes to bed, he doesn’t let her hear how upset he is but things are not going well. On his arrival he went straight to the family home where her parents are both recovering from flu, but they hadn’t seen her. She had contacted them before leaving the island but they hadn’t heard from her in the last few days.”

“So what’s he doing now?”

“He’s in a hotel in Granada ringing around any contacts he remembers her having. He doesn’t want to go to the police or newspapers in case he upsets the family, but he’s getting pretty wound up.”

David was frowning. “Could she perhaps be hiding here on the island and not gone to Spain at all?”

On the point of answering Isabel could be heard greeting someone at the door then Marietta came down the steps into the lounge.

“Who has gone to Spain,” she asked with a laugh.

“Cristina.” Alex said.

The Spanish woman’s laughter died momentarily to be replaced by a sly twitch of her lips. “I did warn you they may be going.” She flashed her eyes at Alex and made her way over to David’s chair.

“You haven’t forgotten you promised to visit with us today?” She gazed down at David.

“Actually I had forgotten,” he rose to his feet and looking at Alex said, “We’ll continue this conversation when I return.”

Alex sat deep in thought for some time until Kate came downstairs wanting something to eat.

It was late when David returned and she was on the point of going to bed.

“Can you give me a minute,” he asked, taking off his jacket and throwing it over the back of one of the chairs.

“Please,” he said, indicating the nearest seat.

With a sigh she came back and sat down in the chair. He took the one opposite.

“Marietta tells me she took Cristina to the airport after Cristina rang her asking for help. She told Marietta she would be staying with friends. She was reluctant to contact her parents for fear of upsetting them.”

“Did she tell you who these friends were?”

“Cristina wouldn’t say.”

Alex stared at him for several minutes then she said, “I don’t believe a word of it. I think our friend Senora Mendes is up to her old tricks again.”

With a gesture of exasperation David left the chair and crossed to the patio doors where he stood looking out over the pool. After a while he swung round to face her, an angry expression on his face. “You’re a doctor for heavens sake how can you not see that you cannot blame Marietta for everything that happens.”
